How to use Talkra

User guide and frequently asked questions

Talkra is a private video calling tool built for psychologists, therapists, coaches, consultants, and anyone who works with clients one-on-one. Every call is strictly between two people, encrypted in transit, and never recorded. Here is everything you need to know about setting up and using Talkra.

1. Account and signing in

You can sign up with an email address or with your Google account. All features are currently free for everyone, with no payment card required.

  1. Email registration: Enter your email to receive a 6-digit confirmation code. Enter the code and set a password of at least 8 characters.
  2. Google sign-in: Click "Continue with Google" to sign in instantly. You can also set a password later under Settings → Security to allow email sign-in as a backup.
  3. Signing out: Click "Sign out" in the navigation menu. To sign out of all active devices at once, go to Settings → Security and select "Sign out on all devices". Signing out on all devices also disconnects connected apps.

2. Dashboard view, time zone, working hours, and language

Customize your workspace under Settings → General:

  • Dashboard view: At the top of Settings → General, choose Month or Timeline. Month shows the month calendar with calls for the selected day. Timeline is the hour-by-hour schedule.
  • Language: Choose English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Polish, Russian, or Ukrainian. The language can also be switched directly from the top bar.
  • Time zone: Talkra auto-detects your browser's time zone when you register. Your schedule and calendar operate in this time zone.
  • Working hours: Set your usual day start and end times, and the default call length. New calls start at the beginning of these hours. In Timeline, Full day shows the rest of the day.
  • Call chat: Under Settings → General, turn on text chat. A chat button then appears inside the call for you and your client. Messages are not saved.

3. Calendar and scheduling calls

The Dashboard has two layouts. Choose them at the top of Settings → General → Dashboard view.

  • Month: A month calendar marks days that have calls. Beside it (or underneath on phones), you see the calls for the selected day. Today jumps back to today when you are looking at another day. The + button adds a call.
  • Timeline: An hour-by-hour schedule. On a phone it shows one day; on a larger screen it shows more days. Click or tap an empty slot, or use New call, to schedule. Drag a call to move it, or drag its lower edge to change the length. Full day shows hours outside your working hours.
  • Next call: When a call is coming up or already in progress, a bar above the calendar offers Join, Copy link, and Share.
  • Opening a call: Click or tap a call to edit it, copy its link, or share it. If it has not ended, Join is on that row too.
  • Call details: Minimum duration is 15 minutes. The booking dialog automatically displays the exact end time.
  • Assigning a client: Select an existing client or type a new name to save one on the fly. If the client has a saved time zone, the session time is shown in both your time zone and theirs.
  • Call types: Tag the call with a custom call type (e.g. Initial Consultation, Therapy, Follow-up). Call types can be customized with colors in Settings → Call types.
  • Sharing the link: Open any scheduled call or use the next-call bar above the calendar to copy or share its link, or share your permanent room link (My room) with recurring clients.

Calls cannot be scheduled in the past and cannot overlap with another appointment.

4. What your client experiences

Talkra is designed to be frictionless for clients:

  • No account or app: Clients open the link directly in their browser on desktop, tablet, or phone (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge). They do not need to register, log in, or install software.
  • Preview before joining: Guests check their picture in the preview and can switch the microphone and camera off before entering. The first time, they tap Turn on camera and microphone and choose Allow. If the browser blocks them, the page shows what to change in that browser.
  • Calm waiting state: If the client joins before you open the room, they see a clean waiting screen confirming the call will start shortly.
  • Automatic link expiration: Scheduled call links are single-use appointment links that safely expire after the scheduled end time has passed.

5. Preparation for the call

Open the call link a few minutes early on the device you will use. Tap Turn on camera and microphone if the page shows it, and choose Allow when the browser asks. If you see yourself in the preview, you are ready.

Ask and Allow both work. Deny or Block hides the dialog, and the preview stays empty until the setting is changed. Find your device below. You can send the same steps to a client.

  • Declined by mistake: On iPhone and iPad, and in Safari on a Mac, the browser does not ask again on the same page. Tap Reload page on the call page, or reload it yourself, and choose Allow. Other browsers may remember the refusal; change it in the settings below.
  • iPhone or iPad, Safari: On the call page, tap aA next to the address (on newer iOS, tap ••• first), then Website Settings, and set Camera and Microphone to Ask or Allow. If the dialog still does not appear, open the Settings app → Apps → Safari (on older iOS, Settings → Safari), scroll down to Camera and choose Ask or Allow. Do the same for Microphone. Deny there blocks every site.
  • iPhone or iPad, Chrome, Firefox or Edge: These browsers also need permission from iOS itself. Open the Settings app → Apps → Chrome (or Firefox, Edge) and turn on Camera and Microphone. If those switches are missing, the browser has not asked yet: open the call link, tap Turn on camera and microphone, and allow both questions (one comes from iOS, one from the browser). Then reload the call page.
  • Mac, Safari: In the Safari menu, choose Settings for This Website and set Camera and Microphone to Ask or Allow.
  • Chrome on a computer: Click the lock or controls icon in the address bar and set Camera and Microphone to Allow. If the dialog never appears, open Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Camera, turn on “Sites can ask to use your camera”, and remove this site from Not allowed. Do the same for Microphone.
  • Chrome on Android: Tap the icon to the left of the address, then Permissions, and turn on Camera and Microphone. If the dialog still does not appear, open the Settings app → Apps → Chrome → Permissions and allow Camera and Microphone.
  • Firefox: Click the lock icon in the address bar and clear the block for the camera and microphone. If no dialog appears, open Settings → Privacy & Security → Permissions, open Camera and Microphone, and turn off “Block new requests”.
  • Edge: Click the lock icon and set Camera and Microphone to Allow. If those options are missing, open Settings → Cookies and site permissions → Camera and turn on “Ask before accessing”. Do the same for Microphone.
  • Other browsers (Samsung Internet, Brave, Opera and others): Open this site’s settings from the icon next to the address and allow Camera and Microphone. On a phone, the browser app also needs camera and microphone permission in the phone’s Settings.
  • Computer privacy settings: On a Mac, open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and turn on the browser you use, then do the same under Microphone. On Windows, open Settings → Privacy & security → Camera, turn on Camera access and Let desktop apps access your camera, then do the same under Microphone. Restart the browser afterwards.
  • Links opened from messengers: WhatsApp and email apps usually open the link in your default browser, so the steps for that browser apply. Telegram, Instagram, Facebook and some other apps open it in their own built-in browser, where the camera often does not work. Use the menu there to open the link in Safari or Chrome (a compass, an arrow leaving a box, or Open in Safari / Open in browser) and join from there. If you stay in the app, the app itself needs camera and microphone permission: on iPhone in Settings → Apps → Telegram, on Android in Settings → Apps → Telegram → Permissions.
  • Still no picture: Close other apps that use the camera (FaceTime, Zoom, Teams, a WhatsApp call), end any phone call, and reload the page. On iPhone, also check Settings → Screen Time → Content & Privacy Restrictions, where the camera can be turned off.

6. During the video call

The call screen is minimalist and distraction-free:

  • Main stage and self view: The other participant fills the main screen. Your own camera appears in a small picture-in-picture window.
  • Draggable self view: You can drag your self-view window anywhere across the screen to maintain natural eye contact, or click the close button (✕) to hide it.
  • Restoring self view: When your self view is hidden, a settings gear appears in the bottom call controls with the option "Show self view".
  • Microphone and camera: Mute your audio or turn off your camera with one click.
  • Full screen: Expand the remote video to full screen for an immersive, focused session.
  • Schedule next: Book the client's next appointment directly from within the active call room without leaving the session.
  • Text chat: When call chat is on in Settings, a chat button sits at the side of the call. Open it to send a short message without leaving the session. The other person sees the same chat. Messages are not saved.

7. My room (Permanent personal link)

Alongside scheduled appointments, you have a fixed room link that never changes:

  • Reusable link: Share your permanent room link once with recurring clients or use it for spontaneous sessions.
  • Lobby and approval: When someone visits your permanent room link, they wait in the lobby while you receive an audible and visual notification to accept or decline their request to enter.
  • Entry only when present: Guests cannot enter the room unless you are present inside it and grant access.

8. Clients and monthly reports

Keep track of your client practice and completed sessions:

  • Clients list: Store client names or aliases and their time zones. Real names are not required — use whatever identifier you prefer.
  • Monthly reports: View summary statistics of completed calls, total session hours, calls per client, and breakdown by call type.

9. Calendar synchronization (Google, Apple, Outlook)

Synchronize your Talkra appointments with your personal calendar app using a live iCalendar feed link (.ics):

  1. Go to Settings → Calendar and enable synchronization.
  2. Copy your private calendar link.
  3. Google Calendar (Desktop/Android): Open calendar.google.com, click "+" next to "Other calendars", choose "From URL", paste the link, and click "Add calendar". It syncs automatically to Android devices.
  4. Apple Calendar (iOS): On iPhone/iPad, go to Settings → Calendar → Accounts → Add Account → Other → Add Subscribed Calendar, paste the link, and save. (You can also open the link directly in Safari to subscribe).

Your calendar link is private because anyone with the URL can view your scheduled calls. Keep it confidential, and reset it in Settings if you ever need to revoke access.

10. AI assistants (MCP)

You can connect Talkra to ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or any other assistant that supports MCP, then ask it to show your calls or schedule a new one.

  1. In your assistant, open the settings for connectors or MCP servers and add a new one with the address https://talkra.eu/mcp.
  2. A Talkra sign-in page opens. Sign in with your email and password or with Google.
  3. Check which app is asking and where it connects, then click Allow.
  4. Ask things like "What calls do I have this week?" or "Schedule a 50-minute call with Anna tomorrow at 10:00".
  5. The assistant can see your calls, clients and call types and schedule new calls. The usual rules apply: no calls in the past and no overlapping calls. It cannot edit or cancel calls.
  6. To disconnect an assistant, go to Settings → Security → Connected apps. Signing out on all devices, changing your password or changing your email also disconnects every assistant.

A connected assistant can see your call times and client names. Only connect assistants you trust.

11. Security, privacy, and account data

Privacy and data ownership are core to Talkra:

  • Direct peer-to-peer media: Audio and video stream directly between the two browsers with WebRTC end-to-end encryption whenever network topology allows.
  • No recordings: Talkra never records, stores, or analyzes your conversations.
  • Data export: Download a complete JSON file of your account, clients, calls, and settings under Settings → Security.
  • Account deletion: Schedule permanent deletion of your account and all associated records with a 14-day cancellation window.

12. What Talkra leaves out (FAQ)

Talkra is built specifically for one-to-one client conversations and deliberately excludes:

  • No group calls: Every call is strictly between two people.
  • No recording or AI transcription: Your conversations remain confidential and unrecorded.
  • No screen sharing: The session stays on the conversation.
  • No billing or invoicing: You manage client payments directly without third-party fees or lock-in.
  • No app downloads: Everything runs smoothly in modern web browsers on desktop, tablet, and mobile.

13. Troubleshooting & connection tips

Common solutions if you or your client encounter issues:

  • Camera or microphone blocked: If the Allow dialog never appears, the browser is set to block this site, or the request was declined once and the page needs a reload. Tap Reload page on the call page, and if that does not help, follow Preparation for the call.
  • Hardware in use by another app: Close other applications that might be using the camera or microphone (such as Zoom, Teams, or FaceTime).
  • Already connected in another tab: If you see a message that you are connected elsewhere, close any other Talkra tabs and rejoin.
  • Call expired: Scheduled call links expire after the session end time. Create a new call or use your permanent room.
